Organization of primary school learning support

Learning support sessions are indicative of the school’s desire to lead each student to success in spite of difficulties that may arise during elementary years.

Support sessions are decided on and organized by the student’s teacher and lessons are tailored to address the difficulties the student is experiencing Sessions may take place in the morning before school starts or after class in the afternoon. They may last between 30 minutes and an hour depending on the student’s age and might be taught by a teacher other than the student’s own, but who consults the student’s room teacher.

These sessions are not set up on a permanent basis, but in modules of six to fifteen sessions for a small group of students encountering similar difficulties. A final assessment session is held to determine the continuation of learning sessions or if it is necessary to give support in different modules. Support sessions cannot be held without prior consent of the parents. As such, the student’s teacher draws up a document that gets signed off by the parents, the teachers involved in the sessions and the head teacher.

Structures in place in grade 6
Tailored individual assistance in French and Mathematics:

This assistance is provided to students with critical deficiencies in French or Mathematics after completion of cycle 3 of primary school. These students are identified with the benchmark of the common base of knowledge and skills which has to be acquired upon admission to grade 6.
A Personal remedial or support class (PPRE) is developed together with a student’s parents and continues for a maximum period of six to eight weeks.
The purpose of this assistance is to remedy students’ shortcomings in small groups of 8 students maximum per class. Weekly French sessions are 1.5 hours long and mathematics 1 hour. These groups can be modified at the end of the program or during the year, according to progress.

Individual Assistance:

This program is designed for students with temporary difficulties in French and/or mathematics. Students are assisted in small groups (12/15 max) to review certain concepts that students are not yet proficient in.
These groups may be modified during the year according to students’ progress or difficulties during the learning process.
